Mary is a spirited personality with a passion for helping others using her artistic gift to work in the local community, developing friendships and enabling others who may be unknown, underprivileged or unappreciated to find enjoyment in art! She especially enjoys work with women, young people and children. When private commissions and community projects are not taking up her time, Mary serves as a dedicated representative and volunteer for Caritas Cyprus-Κοινωνία, in association with the St. Paul's Catholic Parish Paphos.
The upcoming exhibition ‘Acts of Love’ is the result of her weekly work teaching Syrian children at Καταφύγιο Μάθησης/ The Learning Refuge/ملجأ التعلم over the last two years and will incorporate a range of colourful portraits and stories from each of the children, about their lives, where they have come from, their experiences as refugees and migrants. The exhibition will show a video created by girls from Aspire Private British School, created last year to highlight the work of the Learning Refuge. The teachers, who are all volunteers, will be present at the exhibition for all those interested in learning more about our community work, or how to help, or simply to contemplate the new faces and new families arriving in Paphos"
There will be mosaic ‘Sacred Hearts’ on sale, Christmassy candles and other seasonal offerings, and funds will go straight to the Refuge as a contribution toward supplies and activities. The mosaic burning hearts are powerful images which may be contemplated in order to bring transformation or healing into our lives and others.
“If we can assist integration through kindness and love, then we can further teach these Syrian children how to adapt and be valuable members of society, contributing their talents to our Paphos community” Mary Chojnowski
The most important thing is to inspire the children as soon as they come here to live, to help them integrate as equals in a new place, to enable them to benefit from education immediately, and to see themselves as part of our community, sharing in our community pride.
Join us on Wednesday 6th December at 17:30 - see you there
